Mobile Search Engine Optimization

November 24th 2006 14:47
What is Mobile Search?

As consumers’ adoption of enhanced handsets is growing, mobile web is starting to catch more attention. Mobile search means delivering services down to a cell phone however the term also accommodates small screen devices such as a PDA.

Mobile Search Engine Optimization

With the advent of technology the world is getting smaller by the minute. Right now, internet is not limited to desktop PCs and that is nothing new since it has been going on for some time now. However what most don’t know is that you can actually use mobile search as a part of your online advertising campaign. If you are a serious online marketer or a Search engine optimizer, sure enough, you would want to advertise your site on every online possibility there is. Huge possibilities wait in Mobile Web and grabbing that possibility gives you advantage against others who have online presence.

Tips to Remember for Mobile SEO

Have a mobile format for your site. However, if you are unsure of what your site will look like when converted into mobile format, perform a mobile search for your site. Your graphics and lay-out, as you might notice will be unavailable. When making a mobile format for your site, remember that:

1. The most important content should be at the top
2. Navigation must be available and convenient
3. Font sizes are correct
4. Pages must be visible

Mobile web pages are created in WML or XHTML and must comply with the W3C. New Doc types are available to place on your mobile web pages. And it looks like this:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd">

Mobile users are limited with time and space, so be sure that your website is mobile compliant, meaning that your pages are formatted for a mobile phone and should cater what the users need.

Here are a couple of tips on bringing your content to Mobile Web.

1. Link your sites
2. Write for a standard (validate it)
3. Make sure to test your site with a reasonable number of phones.

Mobile Search Popularity

Mobile Search Engine is an infant, and right now the companies benefiting from it are those that belong to the travel, entertainment and business industries. Major search engines can’t deny the large potential of revenue streams from this compact technology. The giant search engines have already started integrating their services to small handheld devices.

Yahoo's goal is to transcend its desktop services to cellphones by offering user choice; WAP Search; SMS Search and Search Clients. Google has launch the first WAP search product in 2000.They also launch SMS search late last 2003 and then launch several products after such as Google local, blogger mobile and Google search & image. Last 2004, Google also introduced mobile web search which is a separate index just for mobile content.

A study has been conducted that those who use mobile search generally earns an annual income of $50,000 to $75,000.

Truly mobile search technology is at its infancy and optimizing your page now puts you eons ahead of your competitors which I might add is an incredible edge. Just imagine, you are practically accessibly anywhere, even when your client is walking down the street, you are just a button away.

Happy Mobile Optimizing!
