Search Wikia's Near Arrival Buzz
January 5th 2007 00:57
I have been bitten by the holiday bug and I have been missing a lot of post lately. I have been meaning to write about this new search engine in town, Search Wikia that is yet released by the founder of Wikipedia Encyclopedia Jimmy Wales. There have been a lot of assumptions and its best that we clear things up once and for all as what Search Wikia can do.
According to my source of information, Jimmy Wales mentioned that:
Search is part of the fundamental infrastructure of the Internet. And, it is currently broken. Why is it broken? It is broken for the same reason that proprietary software is always broken: lack of freedom, lack of community, lack of accountability, lack of transparency.
I am looking for people to continue the development of a wiki-inspired search engine. Specifically community members who would like to help build people-powered search results and developers to help us build an open-source alternative for web search.
Search Wikia has drawn upon its share of controversy from numerous sources at hand. Techcrunch has written a blog about several suppositions that search wikia will be launched as WikiSearch. With this write-up TechCrunch had also put up a screenshot of the supposed ‘WikiSearch’ look. WikiSearch on the other hand is an established search engine that is still in BETA that conducts searches on the Wikiepedia Encyclopedia and all other external listed on it.
Search Wikia is an innovation in process and since the time of its conception it has undergone several changes in its name; all of which are mentioned here.
1. 3apes (directory style search engine)
2. Search Wikia
3. Wikia (later given to WikiCities)
4. Wikiasari (given to the project software)
So that clears another surmise that the name of the Wikia’s search engine, Search Wikia, is Wikiasari. Wikiasari instead is the name given to the project software that Wikia Inc. had worked on. Since the name WikiCities have been given to a Wiki hosting service, their new search engine will be called, “Search Wikia”
