Snap.com: a different way to search
January 22nd 2007 08:19
Snap.com is a new search engine still in beta. Snap is a new search engine that provides us searchers other ways to search. Contrary to big search engines snap is not only smart but it is visual, fast and interactive as well.
Snap said:
"Instead of just relying on computer algorithms to rank search results, Snap also uses click-stream information from a network of one million Internet users. By recording and processing which Web sites users spend time on, and which sites they quickly leave, Snap improves the likelihood that the search results you get will be the results you're really looking for."
Snap is an evolved search engine. As you type in your query, you will get the most popular search result along with its search count under the main search bar. It also gives searchers a direct peek of what the page looks like by providing a site’s preview next to the results. Pretty convenient I might say.
Here are a couple of snap perks:
Fast visual display of result previews / Fast Browsing
For users to better judge if the results are good, it is better to see it rather than just read it. So snap along with the display of text search engine results also gives us a preview of the result. On the left side of snap results you have the text data while on the right side is the preview of the search results. With this eliminates much of the guesswork of search, and thus greatly reduces the number of unproductive back and forth clicks to determine if a site is worth your time.
Actively Anticipate your Intent
The moment you type a letter in the search box, snap actively anticipate you intent. A drop down menu appears instantly offering a list of popular terms, synonyms and other suggestions that can greatly expedite your search experience.
Direct interactivity with search results
You don’t only get a preview with your results but you can directly use it while you still have access with the rest of the search results. You can plug in your dates and destinations for travel or you can copy those lyrics - all while still having access to your results list. Pretty convenient I might say.
Better relevance through past searches
Search results are better with Snap because the ranking algorithm takes advantage of the prior behavior of millions of anonymous searches.. In addition to behavioral data from all across the Internet, Snap incorporates User Contributed Ratings (See Image Below) - a beta feature where You can rate Your results on Snap. All of these clues help snap determine if the site is right for your specific search.
